A new 'media' room for E

Pretty wild weekend for us. Or least an active one.

Friday night, I cracked the temporary crown that had been put on one of my teeth earlier in the day (a very old one needed replacement). Got hold of my dentist, who agreed to open up her office for me Sat. morning.

That meant I couldn't go with E and C to visit Shepherd University on one of their open house days Saturday. They went and report having enjoyed it. They did meet up briefly with John Sheridan, so now E has a familiar face and family connection, which is good.

While they were gone I got the temporary crown replaced, did a Wegman's shopping run, mowed the law and got to the rec center to work out.

Sat. evening, we went to the local coffee shop where some of the guys from Not Dead Yet were having a jam session. M and one of his buddies came along and M ended up sitting on in drums, bass and guitar at various times. It was fun but they were playing on the porch and as the night went on it got really cold. We lasted until about 9:30.

Today, we redid what was the guest room - turning into into a lounge/media room for E. There's a TV and DVD player, and a futon to relax on. She says that will make our home more inviting for having friends over. It's an early birthday present for her.

Next weekend, at least I will likely go to W. Va. because there's a homeowner's meeting. E's going to celebrate her birthday on Sunday by going with some friends to a concert at a nearby park.

M's last week of school is coming up.

Not a good day for a garage sale

I'm sitting here in the garage, hoping somebody will stop at our yard sale. Unfortunately, there's been a slight drizzle all morning. We've had about four cars come by, and only one group bought anything - some old dishes, a breadbox and three stuffed animals. Revenue so far: $6.75. Hopefully that will cover our share of the newspaper ad that the neighbors put in the paper (at least a few other houses are also having sales today).

I'll update as warranted.

9:18 a.m. ET: Car No. 5 just stopped. The couple looked at our stuff for about 60 seconds - we sold nothing. Anybody need a computer printer? We've got three (one's an old Apple brand).

9:20 a.m. ET: Forgot to mention. While I've been sitting here I've also updated On Deadline and published another 30 or so comments that came into it overnight. Might as well be productive.

9:30 a.m. ET: Maybe the picture tells the story. Our offerings are rather skimpy.

9:32 a.m. ET: C suggests we close up. I'm pushing to stay open at least until 10 a.m.

9:35 a.m. ET: Drizzle just turned into real rain. C is heading out to bring stuff in.

9:38 a.m. ET: But wait! Two cars just stopped. Now another!

9:40 a.m. ET: No luck. No sales.

9:41 a.m. ET: C just closed the garage door on me. Guess we're done.

9:48 a.m. ET: Good news. C says the ad isn't costing us anything because the neighbor who placed it used to work for the local newspaper it ran in and got it for free.

Spring has sprung

Lots of dragging of mulch bags around the yard today. Also mowed the lawn. And we took the dogs to a new "dog park" that's opened up nearby. They mostly hung with each other but seemed to enjoy running around and at least being exposed to the other dozen or so dogs that were there.

So, lots of fresh air today.

E drove down to Newport yesterday to spend the night with her friend Kate at Christopher Newport Univ. She drove back today. M is working over at GMU today and this evening, helping set up for a stage production of some sort.

No great furniture buys or anything that exciting for us, I'm afraid.

Next weekend, we'll all go to Bethlehem on Saturday, celebrate Easter and come back here on Sunday.

Rocks, GMU & Shatterbelt advances

Sorry for not updating the blog on Sunday, the usual day of "publication."

Things were a little busy. C and I went to W. Va. on Friday after work. Saturday, we worked a lot on the driveway - smoothing out the gravel after a winter's worth of plowing, moving big rocks around, shifting some fallen branches. Stuff like that. We also went for a good lunch at a funky restaurant we like in Thomas, W.Va. It's called the Purple Fiddle and you can see it for yourself here. Saturday evening we watched the George Mason game. Too bad they didn't win, but it was a good run while it lasted.

Sunday morning I took my bike down the mountain - and the ride/walk back up to the house was a killer. Don't know that I'll ever be in good enough shape to make it the whole way without getting off the bike. But it's "fun" to try.

E was away from Fri. after school until Sunday night at her last color guard competition, in N. Carolina. The team didn't get into the finals at the show, but she reports having had a good time.

M held down the fort here at the house all by himself. No noticeable damage.

Sunday after we got back in the afternoon M and I went to the Verizon store to get him a new cell phone. We were eligible for a low-cost upgrade, and he had pretty much destroyed his previous phone with hard use.

BTW, his band advanced in the "competition" it was part of Thursday night at a bar in D.C. It will be in another battle later this month, I think. If they go all the way, they get a gig at the 9:30 Club in D.C., which is a very big deal. (The guys are in our basement now, working on a new video of a song.)

I thought this was one of my better posts today in On Deadline. Monday night, I jumped into the blog to do this post, even though we don't usually update it that late in the evening. It seemed like the news was worth it, though, and On Deadline ended up being the forum that USA TODAY used to get out its first report about DeLay's announcement.
