Cold Weekend

It was brutally cold yesterday and today in the mountains of W. Va., but we had some fun.

I got out skiing Saturday morning. Fierce wind at the top of the mountain and visibility was pretty bad, but the snow conditions were very good. I lasted about three hours.

Driving back to the cabin, for the first time ever our 4WD wouldn't make it up the last turn. I slid back down about 30 feet to the corner. Rather gracefully (if I do say so myself) turned the SUV while that was happening so that I was then headed down hill.

Then I drove back to the bottom of the mountain and parked along the road that leads into our development. Loaded a few things in my skiboot bag, shouldered my skis and walked up the mile or so to the house. Good exercise, for sure.

This morning, I walked down to the SUV. By then, the road up was in better shape, so I gave the drive another shot. Made it all the way to the top of our driveway. Didn't try to drive down to the house. Just parked there and loaded up.

It took a little more than four hours to get back to Chantilly today, vs. our usual 3:15 or so. First 30 miles were slow going.

We got a lot of good reading done, some jigsaw puzzle building, watched three episodes of The Extras. C made an excellent seafood chowder. All in all a very good weekend.

The photo above was taken with my camera phone in fading light, but you can get a sense of what it was like on Saturday. That's Fenix at the top of our steps. C is off to the left, coming back from a very short walk.
