Quick visit by E

E came home for one night, mostly to see her friend Jennifer before Jennifer heads off to Va. Tech. C went to Shepherd on Friday to pick E up. She was going to stay until Sun., but got an e-mail with an assignment that she couldn't complete here. So I took her back on Sat. On the way back I stopped at one roadside stand and one winery. Nice way to spend a Sat. afternoon (C couldn't come because she was at a party a friend was throwing to celebrate a remodeled kitchen).

Tomorrow, M starts his classes. I believe he has geometry and jazz improvisation.

Check out the new feature at the bottom of USA TODAY's "Nationline" column, page 3A. We're planning a daily "What Others are Reporting" post. Kind of an unusual thing for a newspaper to do, and a good promo for On Deadline.

E is at college

The day went very smoothly. We packed up two vehicles in the a.m. Left here about 11 a.m. Pulled up in front of her dorm about 90 minutes later and a swarm of kids from the college, directed by an adult, converged on our vehicles and emptied them for us.

While we went to park the cars, E got her keys. Then the same swarm carried all the stuff into her room for us.

Roommate Lindsey and her parents arrived about 20 minutes after us. It took an hour and a half or so to get them pretty well set up. We made a run to the local Food Lion to get some drinks and snacks for them, brought that stuff back and around 3:30 or so said our goodbyes.

Her room looks out to the road and bridge that cross the Potomac to Md. (you can see a bit of the water). The Bavarian Inn and restaurant, a local landmark, are right across the street.

After saying goodbye, we went to the library to find John Sheridan and he came with us to a local bakery to have some iced coffees and sweets. He looks and sounds good.

All in all a very good day. Certainly is different without E here and we miss her very much, but it's good to have her in place now at school!

CSNY; Nats vs. Mets; & E @ Va. Beach

Very active the past two days.

C and I went to see Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young last night. Enjoyed it very much. The weather was just great (it was at an indoor/outdoor place) and CSNY were very good. We arrived early enough to enjoy a tailgate picnic. Left before the encores because it's in a location that is very, very hard to get out of in less than an hour or two when the place is packed.

Today, M and his friend Tyler came with me to see the Nats play the Mets at RFK. Good, tight game. Mets won 3-1. We saw Soriano hit the 200th home run of his career and some guy named Tucker hit one for the mets that won it for them.

E is down at Virginia Beach. She went there today with her friend Jennifer (a work friend at Best Buy). They'll come back Tuesday. Then Thursday we take her to college!

Next weekend we hope to go out to the cabin.

Yo Ho Ho

We ended up staying in Va. this weekend. Kind of wanted to be around since E only has two more weekends before going to school. Plus, we wanted to see Pirates. Did that yesterday, and enjoyed it.

The four of us went out for a brunch this afternoon, at a new restaurant (for here) called Eggspectation. As you might expect, if you recall his fondness for all things eggs, it was M's kind of place. All kinds of food, but eggs are the specialty. I had the California Eggs Benedict (a combo of poached eggs, salmon, spinach, home fries and asparagus in a hollandaise sauce). C had the "classic" benedict. M had a cheese and bacon omelet. E had a bagel with fruit. It was all very good.

This evening, I cooked some scallops and calimari that I got at Wegman's this morning. Served them with light salads of tomatoes and avocado. Very good.

Next weekend, C and I go to see Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Should be fun.

And a belated Happy Birthday to Tom!
